Senegal head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw heaped praise on his players’ resilience and tactical discipline after they secured a 1–0 victory over Mali to reach the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 semifinals in Tangier on Friday. The Lions of Teranga booked their spot in the last four with a hard‑earned win that highlighted both patience and performance under pressure.
In the quarter‑final clash, Senegal took the lead in the 27th minute when Iliman Ndiaye capitalised on a defensive error to score the decisive goal. Mali were reduced to ten men shortly before halftime after captain Yves Bissouma received a second yellow card, a turning point that Senegal managed effectively in the second half.
Addressing reporters in the post‑match press conference, Thiaw emphasised that mental strength and tactical discipline were key to navigating a tense and competitive fixture. “We knew this would be a difficult match,” he said, highlighting the importance of maintaining focus against a determined Malian side.
Thiaw also acknowledged the role of squad experience and unity in securing the win, a blend of veteran leadership and youthful energy that has driven Senegal’s campaign. Despite dominating possession and creating more chances, he underlined that defensive organization and game management were crucial in preserving the slim advantage.
The coach stressed that while the victory was satisfying, the team must not grow complacent as they prepare for tougher tests in the semifinal stage. He reiterated expectations that players remain focused and disciplined as the tournament progresses.
Senegal’s success continues a strong AFCON tradition for the West African nation, marking their third semifinal appearance in the last four editions of the competition. Their next opponent will be determined by the outcome of the Egypt vs. Côte d’Ivoire quarter‑final.
