Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez has confirmed that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco will likely be his final appearance at the continental tournament, speaking with candour about his international future following his country’s quarter‑final defeat to Nigeria.
At 34 years old, the former Manchester City star, and one of Algeria’s all‑time leading attackers, signalled his intent to step away from AFCON duties after representing the Desert Foxes across several editions of Africa’s premier football championship.
“This is my final Africa Cup, that’s for sure. I won’t be playing in another Africa Cup of Nations again,” Mahrez said, acknowledging the end of a long and storied chapter in his international career.
Having featured in multiple AFCON tournaments and scored crucial goals along the way, Mahrez reflected on his journey with pride and gratitude.
“After six Africa Cups, more than 20 games, I am happy that I brought one big star for my country,” he added, highlighting memorable moments and personal milestones with Algeria on the continental stage.
Despite Algeria’s exit in Marrakech following a 2–0 loss to Nigeria, a match that saw the Super Eagles prevail to reach the semifinals, Mahrez maintained a sportsmanlike perspective on the outcome.
“This is football; sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Maybe this is a good time for Nigeria to win the AFCON because they have a good generation of players,” he said, acknowledging the strength of Nigeria’s squad while noting the unpredictable nature of tournament football.
He also offered a measured analysis of competitiveness in African football, noting that even talented teams can fall short of success.
“But sometimes you have a good generation of players and you don’t win it. It’s really difficult to win, but I think they have a good chance to win,” Mahrez added.
Mahrez’s confirmation adds a poignant note to an already emotional end to Algeria’s AFCON 2025 campaign, as the team’s captain brings down the curtain on what has been a distinguished international tenure.
