Manchester City saw their Premier League title push suffer another setback after being held to a 1–1 draw by West Ham United at the London Stadium, with forward Antoine Semenyo praising the hosts’ resilience following the fiercely contested encounter.
Despite dominating possession for large spells, City were unable to turn control into victory as West Ham’s disciplined defending ensured the match ended level, underlining once again the unpredictable nature of England’s top flight.
Speaking after the game, Semenyo commended the effort shown by both teams, noting that West Ham’s determination was central to preventing City from capitalising on their territorial advantage.
“You could see the effort from both sides,” he said. “City had a lot of the ball, but West Ham kept fighting and never let the game get away from them.”
Semenyo pointed to West Ham’s compact defensive structure as a decisive factor in the outcome, explaining that the Hammers’ organization made it difficult for City’s attacking players to find space in dangerous areas.
“Their shape was very good,” he added. “They stayed compact and made it hard for City to find space in the final third.”
City enjoyed long spells of possession but struggled to break through a resolute West Ham defence that remained disciplined throughout the contest.
While acknowledging West Ham’s defensive solidity, Semenyo also highlighted City’s technical quality during the match. The forward praised their quick passing, intelligent movement and sustained attacking pressure.
However, he stressed that controlling possession does not always translate into a winning result in a league as competitive as the Premier League.
Reflecting on the broader significance of the draw, Semenyo suggested that results like this can influence the momentum of a demanding season, especially when teams are closely contesting the top positions.
“In this league, every point matters,” he explained. “A draw can change the feeling around the table and give other teams a bit of belief.”
The result served as another reminder of the relentless competitiveness that defines the Premier League. Even against one of Europe’s strongest sides, disciplined defending and collective determination allowed West Ham to claim a valuable point.
For Manchester City, the stalemate represents a missed opportunity in the race for the title, while West Ham will view the result as further evidence of their ability to challenge elite opposition on their day.
