Former Stationery Stores F.C midfielder Chuks Akuneto has recalled how Super Eagles legend Henry Nwosu’s rise in the 1980s inspired young Nigerian players to believe they could represent their country straight from high school.

In an exclusive interview with Jersey Number12 on Monday, Akuneto said Nwosu’s journey demonstrated that youthful dreams in football could become reality, giving aspiring players hope and confidence.

“Henry was the kind of man who lived and breathed football,” Akuneto said. “His love for the game inspired many of us to believe that anything was possible.”

Akuneto explained that Nwosu treated all young players equally, regardless of whether they came from a big city or a small town. He was always ready to guide, mentor, and share knowledge with the next generation.

“He didn’t care where you came from. If you loved football, Henry would support you. That was the kind of heart he had for the game,” Akuneto added.

Playing alongside Nwosu at African Continental Bank (ACB) FC in the 1990s, Akuneto described the former Super Eagles midfielder as a natural leader whose calm personality and dedication to football boosted the confidence of younger teammates.

“Henry’s passion for football was contagious. When you watched him train or play, you immediately understood how deeply he loved the game.”

Beyond technical and tactical guidance, Nwosu also provided financial and moral support to teammates, ensuring younger players developed both on and off the pitch.

“He was not just playing football; he was teaching football. You could see how much the game meant to him every single day,” Akuneto recalled.
“Henry believed that if you truly love the game, you must also take care of the people who play it. That was how passionate he was.”

On the pitch, Nwosu’s intelligence, composure, and ability to read the game made him a standout performer and mentor. Akuneto described playing beside him as an education in itself, noting how Nwosu guided teammates during matches.

“He read the game with so much passion and commitment. Henry didn’t just play; he poured his heart into every moment on the field.”

Reflecting on Nwosu’s legacy, Akuneto said the late football icon will always be remembered for his dedication to nurturing young talent and his unwavering love for football.

“For Henry, football was life. His passion for the game and his kindness to younger players are things we will never forget.”
