Cameroon international goalkeeper André Onana has publicly alleged internal tensions and undue influence within the country’s football structure, claiming his issues stem not from the national team itself but from an individual operating within its leadership.
Speaking during a TikTok Live session hosted by Ayuk Taku, Onana said he remains committed to representing Cameroon but is at odds with what he described as a system that suppresses dissent. “I have no problem with the national team; I have no problem with the FA,” he said, referring to the Cameroon Football Federation. “I am in disagreement with an individual who is using the federation and the national team to settle scores. If you don’t agree, you’re pushed out.”
Onana suggested that his stance has come at a personal cost, including what he characterized as being “forced into retirement,” though he maintained a tone of irony while making the claim. Despite this, he emphasized continued support for the national side, stating that he regularly communicates with younger players and congratulates them after matches.
The goalkeeper also raised concerns about financial disparities and pressure on players during the Africa Cup of Nations held in Côte d’Ivoire. He recounted an incident involving a domestic-based player who allegedly received significantly lower bonuses compared to expectations. According to Onana, the player was advised to remain silent to avoid repercussions.
“I wanted to expose this,” Onana said, referencing a television appearance where he considered speaking out. He claimed that attempts to defend fellow players could lead to intimidation, including pressure on those involved to publicly contradict him.
The remarks point to broader concerns about governance, transparency, and player welfare within Cameroonian football. While Onana stopped short of naming the individual at the center of his allegations, his comments suggest a deepening divide that could have implications for team unity and administration.
As of now, neither the federation nor any officials have publicly responded to the claims.
