UK authorities have launched a major offensive against counterfeit football merchandise ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, seizing more than 4,400 fake shirts in what is being described as the largest raid of a new nationwide crackdown.
The operation, reported by The Athletic, targeted a market stall in England’s Midlands that had been under long-term surveillance. Officers uncovered a significant cache of counterfeit kits, including replicas of national team jerseys such as Argentina national football team, France national football team, Portugal national football team, and England national football team.
Police confirmed that one man was arrested on suspicion of distributing counterfeit goods. He has since been released on bail as investigations continue, with authorities indicating that more suspects are expected to be questioned in the coming weeks.
The raid forms part of a broader effort by UK law enforcement and trading standards officials to clamp down on the illegal sale of fake football merchandise ahead of the World Cup, where demand for national team kits is expected to surge dramatically.
