Ivorian football legend Yaya Touré will become the first African head coach to take charge of a team in the UEFA Champions League league phase when Slovan Bratislava face holders Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday.
Yaya Touré is set to make a historic breakthrough for African coaches when Slovan Bratislava visit Paris Saint-Germain in the opening round of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase.
The former Côte d’Ivoire international will become the first African coach to sit on the bench in the main phase of the modern Champions League, excluding the qualifying rounds.
The milestone is another remarkable step in Touré’s rapid transition from elite midfielder to senior management.
The former Barcelona and Manchester City star only took charge of Slovan Bratislava during the summer, but has already guided the Slovak champions through the Champions League qualifying rounds and into the league phase. Slovan eliminated Slovenian side Celje 3-2 on aggregate in the play-off round, winning the second leg 2-1 after extra time.
Now, his reward is an opening-night assignment against the reigning European champions.
Touré acknowledged ahead of the match that the historical significance of his achievement had initially surprised him.
“It makes it a little strange,” he told L’Équipe, reflecting on discovering that he had become the first African coach to reach the Champions League’s main phase. He described the achievement as symbolic of a changing era for African coaches.
“It’s very difficult for us; we have to work two or three times harder, but things are changing. It’s the era of renewal.”
His comments underline that the achievement is about more than one former footballer reaching Europe’s biggest club competition as a coach.
Touré’s presence on the Slovan bench represents a significant moment for African managers seeking opportunities at the highest levels of European football.
Touré’s playing career established him as one of Africa’s most decorated footballers. He won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2009 and later became one of Manchester City’s most influential players during the club’s rise to domestic dominance. His transition into coaching has been considerably more gradual.
Before taking the Slovan job, Touré worked within coaching structures and most recently served as an assistant with the Saudi Arabia national team. Goal reports that he left that role to take the Slovan position in July.
His appointment at Slovan represents his first senior head-coaching position, making the speed of his Champions League breakthrough particularly striking.
Touré did not inherit a Champions League league-phase place. Slovan had to negotiate the qualifying rounds, overcoming Georgia’s Iberia and Sweden’s Mjällby before the decisive play-off against Celje.
The Slovak side eventually completed a 3-2 aggregate victory over Celje after a dramatic second leg that went into extra time.
That achievement secured Touré a place among the continent’s elite coaches only weeks into his first senior managerial appointment.
It also means his first Champions League league-phase match comes against perhaps the most formidable opponent available.
Paris Saint-Germain enter the fixture as the defending European champions and are seeking a third consecutive Champions League title — something that has not been achieved in the modern competition since Real Madrid’s historic three-peat between 2016 and 2018.
But PSG have not enjoyed the ideal domestic start. Luis Enrique’s side were still without a Ligue 1 victory after three matches following a 2-1 home defeat by Monaco, leaving them seven points behind the early leaders. Reuters reported that it was PSG’s worst start to a Ligue 1 season in 19 years.
Enrique, however, has rejected suggestions of a crisis and remains confident that his team can recover.
That makes Touré’s assignment even more difficult: Slovan are facing a wounded European champion determined to begin its title defence with authority.
Despite the enormity of the occasion, Touré has insisted that his players must approach the match without fear. He described PSG as “one of the best teams in the world” and said he had enormous respect for the French champions, but urged his team to embrace rather than fear the occasion.
For Slovan, the match is already a significant achievement. For Touré, however, it is the beginning of a new chapter. He has already broken one barrier by becoming the first African coach to lead a club into the Champions League league phase.
On Wednesday night, he will attempt to add another achievement to the story — by competing against the reigning champions on their own ground.
