Kylian Mbappé scored twice as Real Madrid defeated Rayo Vallecano 4–1 at the Santiago Bernabéu, extending their remarkable home scoring run and giving José Mourinho’s side a convincing response after their previous La Liga setback.
Mbappé opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute after Álvaro Carreras was brought down inside the area. Carreras then doubled the advantage three minutes later, combining with Mbappé before finishing to make it 2–0.
Jude Bellingham added Real Madrid’s third goal in the 35th minute, converting a move created by Vinícius Júnior to give the hosts a commanding lead before half-time.
Rayo responded five minutes after the restart when Sergio Camello reduced the deficit, briefly raising hopes of a comeback. However, Madrid regained control and continued to create opportunities before Mbappé sealed the victory with his second goal in stoppage time.
The result marked Mbappé’s seventh goal in six appearances for Real Madrid this season, according to the club’s official match report. Real Madrid have now scored at least four goals in four consecutive La Liga matches at the Bernabéu, following victories over Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, Málaga and Rayo Vallecano. The run underlines the attacking strength of Mourinho’s team, although the second-half performance against Rayo also exposed areas that still require improvement.
Mourinho has acknowledged that his players are creating numerous chances but are not always converting them, suggesting that a more ruthless performance could produce even bigger scorelines.
“We create a lot of chances, but we also miss a lot of chances,” Mourinho said. “I just told my staff, someday some poor team will pay for all these chances we miss. Someday, we’ll score seven goals against some team.”
The victory followed Real Madrid’s 2–1 Champions League win over Inter Milan and helped restore momentum after the team’s 1–0 league defeat to Real Betis.
Despite the emphatic scoreline, Rayo caused Madrid problems after the interval, forcing goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois into important saves while Madrid’s defensive organisation came under pressure. Spanish reports also noted periods of frustration among sections of the Bernabéu crowd despite the result.
Real Madrid will now turn their attention to their next league fixture against Elche as they look to maintain their strong start and keep pace with Barcelona at the top of the table.
