Arsenal Dispatch Lille 3–0 as Giroud’s Emirates Return Takes Back Seat to Gunners’ Second-Half Blitz

Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka struck in seven minutes to maintain Arsenal’s perfect Champions League start, while former striker Olivier Giroud received a warm reception on his return to north London.

Arsenal swept aside Lille 3–0 at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, October 13, scoring three goals in seven second-half minutes to secure a second consecutive victory in the UEFA Champions League league phase.

The match was also a special occasion for Olivier Giroud, who returned to the Emirates nearly nine years after leaving Arsenal. The 40-year-old Lille striker came off the bench in the 78th minute and received a standing ovation from the home supporters, according to The Guardian.

After a frustrating opening hour, Arsenal broke the deadlock through Jurrien Timber in the 64th minute. The Dutch defender controlled Noni Madueke’s pass before lifting a composed finish over Lille goalkeeper Berke Özer.

Eberechi Eze doubled the advantage three minutes later, converting Bukayo Saka’s pass, with the effort taking a slight deflection. Saka then completed the scoring in the 71st minute, finishing a flowing move involving Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz.

Lille briefly threatened in the first half when Ayase Ueda found the net, but the goal was ruled out for offside. The visitors ultimately failed to register a shot on target, while Arsenal’s substitutes helped transform a difficult contest into a comfortable victory.

Arteta praises Arsenal’s response

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged that his team had struggled to turn promising positions into meaningful attacking pressure before the break.

“Our technical quality wasn’t good enough to deliver moments of real threat and sustain real attacks,” Arteta said, explaining that a half-time adjustment improved the team’s performance.

He added: “It was a joy to watch the goals that we scored, three different players and a number of different players participating.”

Arteta’s triple substitution, which introduced Saka, Ødegaard and Havertz, proved decisive as Arsenal found the attacking rhythm that had been missing earlier in the match.

Lille manager Davide Ancelotti said his side struggled to match Arsenal’s intensity after the hour mark, particularly against the quality available from the home team’s bench.

“It’s really tough. With the players they always have on the bench, they can change the rhythm of the game,” he said.

Ancelotti also felt the final score was harsh on his players, arguing that their performance over the first 55 to 60 minutes deserved greater credit.

Arsenal extend impressive European run

The result extended Arsenal’s winning run in the Champions League league phase to 14 matches, with nine clean sheets during that sequence, according to Opta Analyst. The Gunners also moved to six points from their opening two matches of the 2026–27 campaign, following their earlier victory over Napoli.

Saka’s contribution was particularly notable. He supplied the assist for Eze before scoring himself, becoming the fifth Arsenal player to score and assist in the same Champions League match after coming on as a substitute. He also moved to 19 goals in major European competition for Arsenal, second only to Thierry Henry’s 42.

For Giroud, the return offered a reminder of his lasting connection with Arsenal supporters. But the evening ultimately belonged to the current Gunners, whose second-half surge preserved their perfect start to the European campaign.
