The French midfielder insists Madrid’s current midfielders are elite in their own right, arguing that differences in playing style should not be mistaken for a lack of quality.
Aurélien Tchouaméni has defended Real Madrid’s current midfield options amid comparisons with the legendary partnership of Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos, insisting that the present generation possesses its own elite qualities.
The France international responded to suggestions that Madrid need a more creative midfielder to replicate the influence of Modrić and Kroos, who played pivotal roles in the club’s success in domestic and European football.
“People comparing our midfield to Modrić-Kroos and saying we need a creative midfielder?” Tchouaméni said.
“We are elite players in the midfield, with different qualities.”
The 26-year-old made clear that he had his own view on the comparisons but chose not to elaborate, leaving the debate over Madrid’s midfield balance to observers.
“I have my own opinion about those comparisons… but I’ll let you say whatever you guys want about what we need and everything,” he added.
A different midfield, a different identity
Modrić and Kroos formed the backbone of one of the most successful midfields in modern football, combining technical control, passing range, creativity and tactical intelligence during Madrid’s era of Champions League dominance.
Kroos retired in 2024, while Modrić left Madrid at the end of the 2024–25 season, bringing an end to a partnership that helped the Spanish giants win multiple Champions League and La Liga titles.
Madrid’s current midfield features players with different strengths, including Tchouaméni’s defensive discipline, Federico Valverde’s energy and versatility, and Jude Bellingham’s ability to carry the ball and contribute in advanced areas.
Rather than reproduce the Modrić-Kroos partnership, Tchouaméni’s comments suggest that the current group should be judged on its own strengths and how effectively its players complement one another.
Creativity remains part of the debate
The discussion reflects the challenge facing Madrid as they adapt to life without two of the defining midfielders of their recent history. Replacing Modrić and Kroos is not simply a matter of recruiting another playmaker; their influence came from years of chemistry, decision-making and control under pressure.
Tchouaméni’s response underlines his confidence in the quality already available at the club. Whether Madrid need an additional creative midfielder, however, remains a separate tactical question that depends on the team’s performances and the balance of its existing options.
For now, the Frenchman’s message is clear: Madrid’s midfield may look different from the Modrić-Kroos era, but he believes its players deserve recognition for their own qualities rather than constant comparison with their predecessors.
