The Egyptian Football Association is seeking detailed explanations for FIFA’s three-match suspensions of the brothers, with their availability for the November and March AFCON 2027 qualifiers dependent on the outcome of any appeal.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan and national team director Ibrahim Hassan risk missing three crucial Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying matches if their three-match suspensions imposed by FIFA are upheld.
The brothers would sit out both of Egypt’s scheduled qualifiers against Malawi in November 2026 and the subsequent encounter against Angola in March 2027, should FIFA reject an appeal against the disciplinary decisions.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) confirmed on Monday, October 19, that FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee had suspended both men for three matches each, while Egypt winger Mostafa Zico received a five-match ban.
However, the EFA has requested the detailed reasons and justifications for the decisions to assess its legal options before determining its next course of action. As of the latest reports, the association had not confirmed that a formal appeal had been lodged.
The sanctions stem from comments made following Egypt’s 3–2 defeat to Argentina in the last 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Hossam Hassan criticised the officiating after the Pharaohs’ elimination, while Zico reportedly made disparaging remarks about the referee in a post-match interview. Ibrahim Hassan was also sanctioned in connection with the controversy.
Egypt had taken a 2–0 lead against Argentina before the South American side fought back to win 3–2. A goal by Zico was disallowed following a foul in the build-up, while Egypt also appealed for a late penalty when the match was level.
FIFA’s refereeing chief, Pierluigi Collina, defended the match officials, warning that accusations against referees could expose them and their families to threats.
The potential absence of the Hassan brothers would be a setback for Egypt as they prepare for the remaining stages of their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign. The outcome of the EFA’s legal response will determine whether the two officials are available for the fixtures against Malawi and Angola.
Zico’s five-match suspension carries a longer potential absence, with reports indicating that he could miss Egypt’s remaining four AFCON 2027 qualifying matches and another fixture, depending on the application of the sanction.
For now, the suspensions remain in place, and the EFA’s request for FIFA’s detailed reasoning is the next reported step in its consideration of a possible appeal.
