Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been hospitalised after collapsing while watching the club’s reserve team train on Friday, with the German champions confirming that the Belgian coach is undergoing medical examinations.
The incident occurred at Bayern’s Säbener Straße training complex in Munich, where emergency services were called after Kompany collapsed during the reserve team’s session. According to German newspaper BILD, a rescue helicopter also landed at the facility before the 40-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance.
In an official statement, Bayern confirmed that Kompany had required medical attention and would remain under medical care while undergoing thorough examinations.
“For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations,” the club said.
Bayern’s board member for sport, Max Eberl, stressed that the manager’s health was the club’s immediate priority.
“Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” Eberl said, adding that the coach would receive the necessary medical support and all the time he needed to recover.
The hospitalisation comes days after Kompany revealed that he had been battling a viral infection. The illness had already forced him to miss training sessions and a pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s UEFA Champions League meeting with Arsenal.
Despite those difficulties, he returned to the touchline for Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with the Premier League side.
Reflecting on his illness after that match, Kompany acknowledged that he had pushed himself too hard.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body – and then at some point my body just said, ‘enough is enough!’” he said.
Sky Sports, citing its German reporting, said Kompany’s condition was stable. However, Bayern’s official statement did not disclose a specific diagnosis or provide a timetable for his return.
The club are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with Kompany’s coaching staff set to oversee the team’s preparations and match-related duties in his absence.
Bayern have expressed their support for the manager as he undergoes further medical assessment.
