Inter Toronto goalkeeper coach Camilo Benzi has called for discussions with the club’s owners to establish a clear direction for the team ahead of next season, acknowledging that changes will be necessary after a disappointing campaign.
Benzi, speaking after Inter Toronto’s 2–1 victory over Atlético Ottawa, said the club must assess its shortcomings, agree on a shared vision and make the adjustments needed to return stronger next year.
“I think we have to have meetings with the owners. We need to know in which direction we’re going to take the club. Everybody needs to push in the same direction,” Benzi said.
“There’s a lot of things they need to change when you don’t have a successful year. Of course, you need to change things to try to come back stronger in the next season.”
He said discussions over the club’s future would take place in the coming months, when the ownership and other relevant stakeholders would determine the path forward.
Benzi acknowledged that Inter Toronto’s early elimination from playoff contention had been difficult for those involved, while expressing support for head coach Mauro Eustáquio and José Cruz, who took charge of the team for the final fixture.
Clarifying his role, Benzi stressed that he was not the team’s interim head coach, explaining that Cruz had led the side against Atlético Ottawa and that he had worked alongside the coaching staff in a supporting capacity.
“It’s been difficult, of course, sad to be eliminated so soon, and we couldn’t do it better,” he said. “The support is there for Mauro, for the Prof., and we’ll see what the future is going to dictate for us.”
Despite the challenges, Benzi pointed to the involvement of four academy players as an encouraging sign of progress in the club’s youth development programme.
“We play with four players from the academy, and that’s proved the academy is working well,” he said. “In the end, that’s what we try to help with — the younger players to become professional.”
His comments highlighted the importance of developing young talent while ensuring the senior team is better equipped to compete in the Canadian Premier League next season.
Inter Toronto ended their campaign with a victory over Atlético Ottawa, but the result came after a season that fell short of the club’s ambitions. Benzi’s focus now is on the forthcoming review process, with decisions expected to emerge from discussions about the club’s direction and the changes required to improve its fortunes.
