The Super Eagles delivered a statement performance in London on Saturday night as Nigeria dismantled Jamaica 3-0 to successfully retain the Unity Cup title at The Valley.
Alhassan Yusuf Abdullahi starred with a brilliant brace while Terem Moffi also got on the scoresheet in a dominant display that left Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz chasing the game for long stretches in front of their passionate supporters.
From the opening whistle, Nigeria looked sharper, stronger and more organized.
Just four minutes into the final, Kenneth Igboke launched a dangerous long throw into Jamaica’s penalty area. Goalkeeper Coniah Boyce-Clarke punched the ball into traffic, but Abdullahi reacted quickest to fire Nigeria ahead and ignite celebrations among the large Nigerian contingent inside the stadium.
The early goal immediately settled Eric Chelle’s side and exposed Jamaica’s defensive vulnerabilities.
Nigeria controlled midfield with authority as Abdullahi, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Femi Azeez combined effectively to stretch the Reggae Boyz across the pitch.
Jamaica briefly threatened through Kaheim Dixon in the eighth minute, but Arthur Okonkwo remained alert to comfortably stop Brown’s header.
The Super Eagles continued dominating possession and looked dangerous every time they attacked.
Rafiu Durosinmi nearly added a second goal before halftime after Nigeria broke quickly on the counterattack, but Boyce-Clarke produced a good save to keep Jamaica alive heading into the break.
Any hopes of a Jamaican comeback quickly disappeared early in the second half. Femi Azeez whipped in a superb cross in the 52nd minute and Terem Moffi powered home a header to double Nigeria’s lead and further underline the Super Eagles’ superiority.
Azeez tormented Jamaica’s defense throughout the night with his creativity and set-piece delivery, while Nigeria’s defensive line remained composed whenever the Reggae Boyz attempted to push forward.
Coach Eric Chelle’s tactical structure once again stood out as Nigeria combined aggressive pressing with quick transitions and disciplined defending.
The Super Eagles never looked vulnerable despite Jamaica enjoying occasional spells of possession.
Nigeria sealed the victory deep into stoppage time after substitute Philip Otele won possession high inside Jamaica’s half before sliding the ball into Abdullahi’s path.
The midfielder calmly drilled an angled finish beyond Boyce-Clarke to complete his brace and crown an outstanding individual performance.
The final whistle sparked celebrations among players and fans as Nigeria retained the Unity Cup trophy in convincing fashion.
The victory also continued an encouraging start to Eric Chelle’s tenure after the Super Eagles previously defeated Zimbabwe in the semi-final earlier in the week.
Tournament organizers later presented the trophy to captain Francis Uzoho, with NFF president Ibrahim Musa Gusau and National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko joining the celebrations on the pitch.
For Abdullahi, the tournament represented a major breakthrough moment in national team colours.
The midfielder not only delivered goals but also brought intensity, energy and composure to Nigeria’s midfield throughout the competition.
Nigeria will now turn attention toward their upcoming international friendly against Poland at the PGE Narodowy Stadium in Warsaw on June 3.
