AFCON 2025 Round of 16: Cameroon Outlast South Africa; Morocco Edge Tanzania to Set Up Quarterfinal Clash

In a thrilling day of knockout football at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon and Morocco secured their spots in the quarterfinals with hard-fought victories over South Africa and Tanzania, respectively.

Cameroon advanced to the quarterfinals after a 2–1 win over South Africa at Stade El Barida. Despite South Africa’s strong start, Cameroon took the lead in the 34th minute when Junior Tchamadeu capitalized on a well-executed move . Christian Kofane doubled the advantage in the 47th minute, putting Cameroon firmly in control.

South Africa pulled one back in the 88th minute through substitute Evidence Makgopa, setting up a tense finish. However, Cameroon held on to secure their place in the last eight, where they will face hosts Morocco.

Meanwhile, Morocco had earlier booked their quarterfinal berth with a narrow 1–0 victory over Tanzania in Rabat. The decisive goal came in the 64th minute when Brahim Díaz scored his fourth goal of the tournament, becoming the first Moroccan to net in four different AFCON matches.

Despite dominating possession and creating several chances, Morocco were unable to extend their lead. Tanzania had opportunities to equalize, notably through Simon Msuva and Feisal Salum, but failed to capitalize.

With this win, Morocco set up a quarterfinal clash against Cameroon, promising an exciting encounter between two African football powerhouses.
