AFCON 2025: Tension in Super Eagles Camp as Osimhen Confronts Lookman, Snubs Teammates After 4–0 Victory

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco was overshadowed by a tense moment between two of the team’s key forwards, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman.

Despite the Super Eagles cruising to a convincing victory, Osimhen was visibly agitated during the second half and was seen angrily confronting Lookman on the pitch following a breakdown in play. The altercation appeared to stem from a disagreement over a missed opportunity, with Osimhen expressing frustration that Lookman had failed to release the ball at the right moment. Television footage showed the Galatasaray xe striker gesturing animatedly and needing to be calmed down by other teammates.

The incident drew immediate reactions from the crowd, with sections of the fans booing Osimhen as he was later substituted. The forward, who scored twice in the match, walked straight into the tunnel without joining in the team’s post-match celebrations.

Osimhen’s isolated exit continued in the dressing room area, with reports indicating that he declined to interact with teammates or speak with the media. Eyewitnesses said he was the first player to board the team bus, raising fresh concerns over unity within the Super Eagles squad.

In a post-match interview, Lookman downplayed the incident, describing it as “nothing serious,” and reiterated his respect for Osimhen. “Things like that happen in football. Emotions run high, especially in big games. Victor is a fantastic teammate and we’ve moved on,” said the Atalanta forward.

Head coach Eric Chelle also sought to calm the storm, telling reporters that such tensions are part of competitive sports. “This is football, high intensity, high stakes. The matter will be addressed internally. We are focused on the quarterfinals,” Chelle said.

The Nigerian team is now set to face the winner of game between DR Congo and Algeria in the quarterfinals on Saturday, January 10.

With growing expectations at home and a demanding path ahead, team harmony will be critical if Nigeria is to maintain its momentum in the tournament. Whether Osimhen’s outburst was a one-off or a sign of deeper unrest remains to be seen.
