Patrice Motsepe has revealed plans to expand the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to 28 teams, a move set to significantly reshape the continent’s flagship tournament and increase pressure on future host nations.

Under the proposed structure, the competition would feature seven groups of four teams, marking a major shift from the current 24-team format.
The announcement underscores CAF’s ambition to broaden participation and competitiveness across Africa.

However, the move also introduces significant logistical and infrastructural demands.

CAF expects each nation to deliver at least two standard stadiums, meaning a minimum of six venues will be required to stage the tournament effectively.

With timelines tightening, the three East African nations are under growing pressure to accelerate construction, upgrades, and overall readiness.

While expansion promises growth, it also raises key concerns like infrastructure readiness across multiple countries and travel logistics for teams and fans.
