Sergio Agüero believes Cristiano Ronaldo can reach the historic 1,000-goal milestone if the Portugal captain continues playing for another season.
Ronaldo is currently reported to be 21 goals short of the landmark, with his career tally standing at 979 official senior goals for club and country, according to independent goal-tracking data. <Cite refs={“turn0search2″,”turn0search3”
Speaking in an interview with Stake, Agüero acknowledged that Ronaldo’s future remains uncertain but said the forward’s remarkable scoring consistency gives him a strong chance of completing the feat.
“I don’t know how much longer he’ll play, but he only needs another 21 goals. He can certainly do it,” Agüero said.
The former Manchester City striker added that Ronaldo’s ability to score regularly could help him overcome the remaining distance, although his plans after the current league season could determine whether he reaches the target.
“I don’t know what his plans are when the league season finishes or whether he’ll continue for another season,” Agüero explained. “Scoring goals obviously isn’t easy, but he does it regularly.”
Agüero also compared Ronaldo’s scoring threat with that of Lionel Messi, highlighting the likelihood of either player finding the net whenever they appear on the pitch.
“He’s like Leo: whenever he’s on the pitch, there’s a good chance he’ll score. If he stays for another season, I think he can achieve it.”
Ronaldo has previously stated that reaching 1,000 career goals is one of his major ambitions. In December 2025, he said he intended to continue playing until he reached the figure, provided he avoided injuries. At the time, he had 956 goals. <Cite refs={“turn0news14″,”turn0search0”
