Semi Ajayi was the unlikely hero as Hull City produced a dream Premier League comeback, beating Manchester United 2–0 on their return to the English top flight.
The Nigerian defender put Hull ahead in the 17th minute after the home side capitalised on a corner, sending the MKM Stadium into celebration and ending the club’s nine-year wait for another Premier League goal.
Hull refused to sit back after taking the lead and were rewarded again before half-time. Nobel Mendy rose to head home from a free-kick in the 38th minute, giving Sergej Jakirovic’s side a commanding 2–0 advantage.
Manchester United attempted to respond after the interval, controlling possession for long periods, but their attacking play lacked the quality and urgency required to break down a disciplined Hull defence. The visitors finished without a goal as the Tigers protected their advantage.
The victory marked Hull’s first-ever Premier League win against Manchester United and their first league victory over the Red Devils since 1974. It also gave the promoted side an extraordinary start to their return to the top flight.
Ajayi’s performance added an important Nigerian dimension to the historic result. After scoring the opener, the Super Eagles centre-back helped Hull keep United at bay and secure a clean sheet against a side that finished third in the Premier League last season.
For Manchester United, the result raises immediate questions about their readiness for the new campaign under Carrick, particularly after a performance widely described as disjointed and toothless.
Hull 2–0 Manchester United: a dream return for the Tigers, a nightmare opening day for United — and a memorable afternoon for Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi.
