Nigerian defender Akpe Victory produced a standout performance for FC Basel, scoring his first goal for the Swiss club and providing an assist as Basel fought back from two goals down to draw 3-3 away to BSC Young Boys in the Swiss Super League.
Young Boys raced into a 2-0 lead through Joel Monteiro and Samuel Essende, but Basel responded through Nigerian forward Kazeem Olaigbe, who pulled one back in the 32nd minute before Asane Sow levelled the contest five minutes later. Alvyn Sanches restored Young Boys’ advantage just before half-time.
Victory then completed Basel’s dramatic recovery in the 71st minute, finding the equaliser after being set up by Flavius Daniliuc. The goal secured a 3-3 draw and marked the 20-year-old centre-back’s first goal since joining Basel.
The Nigerian defender’s contribution extended beyond his attacking output. Victory also produced a crucial goal-line clearance in the second half to prevent Young Boys from restoring a two-goal advantage. He subsequently completed the entire match and was rated 8.2 by Sofascore, underlining his overall influence on Basel’s performance.
Victory has quickly established himself as an important member of Basel’s defence since arriving from Zalaegerszegi TEin July. The 20-year-old, who previously played for Lithuanian side FK Banga, signed a contract with Basel running until June 2030.
The 195cm centre-back has now featured in all six of Basel’s matches this season, completing every game. For Basel, the comeback earned a valuable point against a Young Boys side that had twice established a two-goal advantage during the contest. The result leaves Basel with 10 points from five league matches, according to the latest available standings.
