Arokodare Extends Scoring Run as Ajax End 11-Match Winless Streak Against AZ

Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare continued his impressive scoring form with the decisive goal as Ajax defeated AZ Alkmaar 1–0 at the Johan Cruyff ArenA on Saturday, ending an 11-match winless run against their Eredivisie rivals.

Arokodare struck in the ninth minute, rising above his marker to head home a well-delivered cross from 17-year-old Abdellah Ouazane and give Ajax an early advantage.

The goal proved decisive in a closely contested encounter, with Ajax unable to extend their lead despite creating opportunities before the break.

The Amsterdam side suffered a setback in the 38th minute when Julian Brandt was forced off with an apparent injury and replaced by Oscar Gloukh. AZ subsequently increased their pressure, particularly after the interval, as they searched for an equaliser.

Ajax goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen helped preserve the advantage, producing an important late intervention to deny Mexx Meerdink and secure a clean sheet for the hosts.

The victory was particularly significant for Ajax, who had failed to beat AZ in their previous 11 meetings, recording seven defeats and four draws. Their last victory over the Alkmaar club had come in March 2022.

The result also lifted Ajax back into second place in the Eredivisie standings, one point behind leaders Feyenoord, who were held to a 1–1 draw by Fortuna Sittard.

Arokodare’s latest contribution further strengthens his growing influence at the Dutch club. The Nigerian forward joined Ajax on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 2026, with the agreement including an option to make the move permanent.

His 2026/27 return is listed by BeSoccer at 10 goals and three assists across all competitions, underlining a productive start to his spell in Amsterdam.

For Ajax, his continued scoring form offers an important attacking outlet as they pursue domestic success and compete in the UEFA Conference League.
