Moroccan giants AS FAR produced a stunning performance in Cairo to eliminate defending champions Pyramids FC from the CAF Champions League, sealing a 2–1 victory on the night and progressing 3–2 on aggregate.
The result confirmed a major upset in the quarter-finals, as the Moroccan side overturned expectations against the reigning African champions, who were crowned just last year after a historic triumph. ([Reuters][1])
AS FAR made a blistering start, taking the lead inside the opening minutes to silence the home crowd. Their early dominance set the tone for a disciplined and clinical display against a Pyramids side under pressure to defend their crown.
After the break, the visitors doubled their advantage with a well-worked goal, putting themselves firmly in control of the tie and leaving Pyramids chasing the game.
The Egyptian side responded through forward Fiston Mayele, who pulled one back to revive hopes of a comeback. However, despite late pressure, the hosts were unable to find the equaliser that would have forced extra time.
The victory sees AS FAR avenge their previous elimination by Pyramids and book a place in the semi-finals, where they will face either RS Berkane or Al Hilal Omdurman.
For Pyramids, the defeat marks a disappointing end to their title defence, as their campaign comes to a halt at the quarter-final stage despite high expectations.
AS FAR, meanwhile, continue their pursuit of continental glory, aiming to secure their first CAF Champions League title since 1985, as they build momentum heading into the final four.
