Former Ajax forward Ahmed Hossam Mido has launched a scathing attack on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following its controversial decision to strip Senegal national football team of the Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco national football team.
The ruling, announced on March 17, 2026, has sparked widespread backlash across the football world, with Mido’s remarks amplifying growing criticism from players, officials, and analysts.
Taking to his X account, the former Egyptian striker did not hold back, describing CAF’s decision as a major blow to the integrity of the game.
“CAF is a real joke… This is the biggest scandal in the history of soccer,” Mido wrote.
“Senegal were the better team and deserved the title. I cannot congratulate Morocco because this was not won on the pitch.”
Mido insisted that championships must be decided on the field, warning that administrative reversals risk eroding trust in African football competitions.
The former Zamalek SC striker also raised concerns about the global image of African football, suggesting the decision could reinforce negative perceptions about governance on the continent.
“This will make us look like what the Western world wants us to look like… backward and a corrupted continent,” he added.
His comments underline a broader concern about transparency and fairness within CAF, with critics arguing that the ruling sets a dangerous precedent where titles can be determined off the pitch.
As pressure mounts, CAF faces increasing calls to clarify its decision and address concerns over its disciplinary processes. For now, voices like Mido’s continue to keep the controversy firmly in the spotlight of global football discourse.
