Cameroon in Turmoil Ahead of AFCON 2025: Coach Sacked, Onana Omitted from Squad

With just weeks remaining before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, the Cameroonian national team faces significant upheaval.

On December 1, the Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) announced the dismissal of head coach Marc Brys. The decision followed ongoing tensions between Brys and FECAFOOT President Samuel Eto’o, who had previously opposed Brys’s appointment by the Ministry of Sports. In response, FECAFOOT appointed David Pagou as the new head coach, with Martin Ndtoungou Mpile serving as his assistant.

Compounding the coaching changes, the official 28-man squad for AFCON 2025 was announced, notably excluding goalkeeper André Onana. Despite being fit and active with Turkish club Trabzonspor, Onana’s omission follows a history of disciplinary issues, including a suspension during the 2022 World Cup and a brief retirement from international football. The squad also sees the exclusion of veteran striker Vincent Aboubakar and midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, the latter due to injury. Notable inclusions are Bryan Mbeumo of Manchester United and Carlos Baleba of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Cameroon is set to compete in Group F alongside Gabon, defending champions Ivory Coast, and Mozambique. The tournament runs from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.
