Nigeria Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle sidestepped a question from a visiting Malian journalist about returning to coach Mali, emphasizing professionalism and his current focus on Nigeria’s project during the third-place match post-game press conference at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking after Nigeria secured the bronze medal with a penalty shootout victory over Egypt, Chelle reiterated that his immediate priority remains analysing the AFCON campaign and assessing his future with the Super Eagles, rather than addressing speculation about coaching elsewhere.
“My future? Now I don’t know. I know something: I am the coach of Nigeria, and maybe in a few days my president will tell me it’s finished for me, or maybe I continue,” Chelle said when pressed about his status. He made clear that decisions about his coaching path will be made in consultation with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) after the tournament concludes.
Chelle, who was appointed by the NFF in January 2025, has overseen a campaign that included reaching the AFCON semi-finals and ending with a podium finish, achievements that have sparked debate about his long-term role.
Addressing the Malian journalist’s suggestion that he might return to his former role with Mali, the tactician remained measured, stressing professional commitment and the need for clarity from his current employers. He acknowledged the importance of focusing on his current squad and responsibilities before contemplating future opportunities.
Support for Chelle’s continuation with Nigeria has been voiced by figures within the squad, including captain Wilfred Ndidi, who called for continuity despite the team falling short of tournament goals.
For now, Chelle said the focus must stay on building on the Super Eagles’ AFCON momentum, with upcoming discussions between him and the NFF expected to determine whether he leads Nigeria beyond the tournament.
