Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national-team camp in Copenhagen, intensifying uncertainty surrounding his relationship with newly appointed head coach Jorge Jesus just one day before Portugal’s Nations League meeting with Denmark.
Ronaldo’s departure was initially reported by Portuguese media before the Portugal captain confirmed the decision himself. He said he would explain the reasons for his departure at a later stage.
The development follows several days of tension surrounding the 41-year-old forward and his role under Jesus.
Ronaldo did not participate in Portugal’s on-field training on Wednesday. The Portuguese Football Federation said he had instead carried out individual work in the gym.
The situation follows Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway on Sunday, when Ronaldo remained an unused substitute despite Jesus previously indicating that he could feature.
Reports in Portugal said Ronaldo was unhappy with the way the situation had been handled. The issue became a major topic around the national team, prompting Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença to travel to Copenhagen amid the growing uncertainty.
Jesus insists there is no dispute
Despite the mounting speculation, Jorge Jesus publicly rejected suggestions of a serious dispute with Ronaldo.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Portugal coach attempted to shift attention toward Thursday’s match against Denmark, while acknowledging that he and Ronaldo had discussed the situation.
Jesus said Ronaldo had told him that he would accept whatever decision the coach made — whether to play, remain on the bench or watch from the stands.
The coach also said the matter had been resolved after the pair spoke over dinner.
However, Jesus subsequently indicated that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark, adding another layer to the uncertainty surrounding the captain.
Portuguese media reported that Ronaldo and Jesus had held a meeting on Tuesday night, with the conversation initially described as having eased the disagreement.
Ronaldo’s decision to leave the camp the following day has nevertheless reopened questions over the relationship between the two men.
Ronaldo’s international future remains unclear
Ronaldo’s departure should not, at this stage, be interpreted as an announcement of international retirement.
The veteran forward remains part of Portugal’s plans and had continued playing for the national team following the 2026 World Cup, his final appearance at the tournament.
He has not publicly announced that he is ending his international career.
Instead, his latest departure leaves his immediate involvement with Portugal uncertain, with Ronaldo indicating that he intends to provide further clarification.
Portugal now face Denmark without their captain as the controversy overshadows the team’s Nations League campaign.
Portugal prepare for Denmark
The match in Copenhagen comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Jesus, who is beginning his tenure as Portugal coach.
Portugal entered the Nations League campaign with victories over Wales and Norway, while Denmark have also been competing in the same League A group.
The Portuguese side will now have to prepare for Denmark while dealing with the absence of one of the most prominent figures in the country’s football history.
For the moment, the confirmed sequence of events is clear: Ronaldo did not train with the team on Wednesday, tensions surrounding his role under Jesus intensified, FPF president Pedro Proença became involved, and Ronaldo subsequently left the national-team camp.
What remains unresolved is whether the incident represents a temporary disagreement or signals a more significant change in Ronaldo’s relationship with the Portugal setup.
Ronaldo has said that he will provide his explanation. Until then, claims concerning the precise reason for his departure, his private flight and his long-term international future should be treated with caution.
