Jonathan Davies: “There’s no better feeling than winning it at the end.”

Canada forward Jonathan Davies praised his side’s resilience after their dramatic victory over South Africa, describing the late triumph as one of the best feelings in football after an intensely contested match.
“It was unbelievable, especially in a game like this that was so hard. There was barely anything in it,” Davies said. “To win it at the end, I think there’s no better feeling. It shows the resilience of the team and the brotherhood we have.”
Davies also highlighted the team’s focus in front of goal, saying the players were determined to make every opportunity count.
“We really focus on making sure that when we take shots, we put them on target. I think that was in the back of everyone’s mind.”
Reflecting on the celebrations after the decisive goal, Davies admitted his emotions took over.
“When I started running, it was just pure excitement, pure joy and relief.”
The Canada forward credited substitute Alphonso Davies with transforming the game after coming off the bench.
“Immediately he changed the game,” he said. “I felt like they weren’t scared, but they were a bit hesitant. That gave us more space to play. We got back on the front foot and started creating danger again. He gave us a really, really good boost.”
Davies also revealed that no words were needed during the emotional post-match moment shared with teammate Jesse.
“To be fair, he didn’t say anything,” he said. “When you look at each other, the first person says a thousand words. He didn’t need to say anything. We just understood.”
With Canada now awaiting the winner of the Netherlands-Morocco clash, Davies said the squad would watch with interest while leaving the tactical analysis to the coaching staff.
“We’ll be watching to see who we play,” he said. “The staff will probably be looking more carefully at the tactical details, but for us it’s about finding out who our next opponent will be.”
