Dual-Nation Dilemma: Auxerre Defender Senaya Called Up by Ghana and Togo

Auxerre right‑back Marvin Senaya has found himself at the centre of an international eligibility tug‑of‑war after being named in the senior squad lists of both Ghana and Togo for this month’s friendly internationals, a rare situation for a dual‑eligible player ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Senaya, 25, who plays his club football in France with AJ Auxerre, has been officially included in Ghana national football team coach Otto Addo’s 26‑man squad for friendly matches against Austria and Germany later this month. Ghana’s squad list confirmed Senaya alongside defenders including Alexander Djiku and Gideon Mensah, marking his first formal invitation from the Black Stars.

In the same FIFA international window, Senaya was also listed by the Togo national football team in an expanded preliminary squad for friendlies against Guinea and Niger. according to reports from the Togo Football Association and media outlets covering the Éperviers’ preparations. The Togolese camp’s provisional list includes Senaya as one of several players of dual nationality being assessed ahead of final selections.

Senaya was born in France and comes from a footballing family: his father, Yao Mawuko Senaya, is a former Togo international. Through heritage connections, the defender is eligible to represent France, Ghana, or Togo at senior international level.

Under FIFA eligibility rules, a player appearing in a friendly match does not permanently tie him to that nation; only competitive fixtures (e.g., World Cup qualifiers, continental qualifiers/ tournaments) lock in national allegiance. Because both Ghana and Togo have invited Senaya for camps in the same window, he may still choose which country to represent — but the decision becomes one of the most notable dual‑national calls of the current cycle.
