Atlético Ottawa defender Julian Dunn has expressed confidence in his side’s ability to challenge Forge FC in the Canadian Premier League playoffs, insisting the team will approach the semi-final tie with the right intensity and mindset despite their 2–1 defeat to Inter Toronto.
Dunn acknowledged that Inter Toronto had got the better of Atlético in their final regular-season fixture but stressed that the result would not undermine the team’s preparations for the upcoming playoff encounter.
“I have no doubt that we’re going to be ready for the game next week, and we’re going to come with the right intensity and the right mindset,” Dunn said after the match.
The defender was equally emphatic about Atlético’s chances against Forge, insisting his teammates had the quality to compete with any side when performing at their best.
“I’m extremely confident in the group. On our day, we can go against any club. So, there’s no fear in the group,” he said. “We know what they have to offer, and we’re going to be prepared.”
Dunn’s comments underline Atlético’s determination to put the defeat behind them and shift their focus to the decisive stage of the campaign, with a place in the next round at stake.
The Toronto-born defender also reflected on the personal significance of playing in front of friends and family in his hometown, having previously been associated with Toronto FC.
“It’s always nice coming home. Obviously, I had a lot of friends and family in the stands today,” Dunn said. “It’s an honour to just be playing this sport and doing it in front of my friends, my family, especially given my history. So, yeah, it’s just a blessing.”
Beyond the result, Dunn welcomed the return of teammates from injury and the increased competition for places as Atlético prepare for the playoffs.
He praised centre-back partner Thierdou Eny-Walker, who returned to action after an extended spell on the sidelines, and highlighted the importance of having more players available as the team enters the knockout phase.
“Whenever we can get guys back to full fitness, it’s great for the group. Everyone plays a huge part in the team’s success, so the more numbers we have, the more competitive the group is,” he said.
“There’s only 11 guys on the pitch, but it takes the entire team to get results and win games.”
Dunn described Eny-Walker’s return as a positive development despite Atlético’s defeat, noting that the defender had completed his first full 90 minutes in some time.
“I’m really happy to see him back. He looked great out there today,” Dunn said. “Obviously, not the result we wanted, but on a personal level, I know it’s going to be a game that he remembers. First 90 back in a while. So, cheers to him, and I’m really happy for him.”
With the regular season concluded, Atlético Ottawa must now turn their attention to Forge FC, with Dunn confident that a focused and fully competitive squad can rise to the challenge.
