ENGLAND MISFIRE AS GHANA EXPOSE ATTACKING ISSUES IN GOALLESS WORLD CUP STALEMATE

Tuchel’s Side Dominate Possession but Fail to Break Down Resilient Black Stars

England’s hopes of securing an early place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout rounds were put on hold after a frustrating 0-0 draw against Ghana, a match that raised fresh questions about the Three Lions’ ability to unlock disciplined opposition.

Thomas Tuchel’s side controlled possession from the opening whistle, but dominance on the ball failed to translate into goals, chances or attacking fluency.

At one stage in the first half, England had completed 111 passes compared to Ghana’s 14, illustrating the extent of their territorial superiority.

Yet for all their control, England produced little of consequence.

By the 34th minute, England had registered only three attempts on goal despite enjoying 86 percent possession. Their expected-goals tally remained remarkably low, reflecting Ghana’s effectiveness in forcing play into harmless areas.

The tactical battle quickly became one-sided in terms of possession but evenly balanced in terms of threat.

Carlos Queiroz instructed his players to sit deep, remain compact and trust their defensive shape. The strategy frustrated England throughout the evening.

Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane and England’s attacking unit struggled to find space between the lines, while Ghana’s disciplined structure repeatedly forced the European side into sideways passing sequences.

The Black Stars were not without opportunities of their own.

As the match progressed, Ghana became increasingly comfortable and dangerous in transition. Their best chance arrived late in the contest when a rare opening appeared behind England’s defense, but Adu failed to capitalize.

It was a reminder that Ghana’s plan was never solely about defending.

The African side sought to absorb pressure and strike when opportunities emerged.

For England, the performance represented a significant step backward from their opening victory over Croatia.

The creativity, movement and cutting edge that characterized their first match were largely absent, leaving Tuchel visibly frustrated on the touchline.

The result keeps England at the top of the group on goal difference, but qualification remains unfinished business heading into the final round of fixtures.

More concerning for Tuchel will be the growing evidence that teams willing to defend deep can significantly disrupt England’s attacking rhythm.

Ghana exposed that weakness.

And while the point strengthened the Black Stars’ qualification hopes, it left England with questions still to answer before the knockout stage begins.
