Patrice Evra has defended Michael Carrick and criticised fellow Manchester United legends for what he described as unnecessary negativity toward the club’s current boss.
The former Manchester United left-back said he does not understand why Carrick has received limited backing from ex-teammates now working as pundits, including Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and Gary Neville.
Speaking in an interview with Stake, Evra expressed frustration with the criticism directed at Carrick after recent results.
“I really don’t understand the lack of support behind Michael Carrick, he’s one of us and he’s doing very well,” Evra said.
Evra also referenced a recent social media post by Scholes that appeared to mock Carrick after United’s defeat to Newcastle, admitting he hoped the message was not genuine.
“I hope Paul Scholes’ Instagram story is fake. I hope he was hacked,” Evra added.
The Frenchman argued that the criticism from former teammates now working in television punditry has been excessive at a time when the club is battling to secure a Champions League place.
“There’s been negative analysis from Scholesy, but also from Roy Keane and Gary Neville. It annoys me because we want to be in the top four and those comments are unnecessary.”
Evra also took a swipe at the trio’s own managerial records, suggesting their criticism of Carrick was unfair given their mixed experiences in coaching roles.
The debate around Carrick intensified after Scholes posted a sarcastic message following United’s recent defeat to Newcastle, which drew backlash from some fans and former players.
Despite the criticism, Carrick has overseen a strong run of results since taking charge, guiding United into the Premier League’s top-four race and reviving their hopes of returning to the Champions League next season.
Evra, however, insists the focus should remain on unity around the club rather than public criticism from former teammates.
“As players they’re legends, but as managers they haven’t done a great job,” Evra said, warning that harsh comments could damage Carrick’s managerial career.
