FIFA Cancels Thousands of Vancouver Hotel Rooms Ahead of 2026 World Cup, Raising Planning Questions

Yomi Kuku, Toronto Canada

FIFA has canceled thousands of hotel room reservations in Vancouver ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, in a move that has surprised the hospitality sector and raised fresh questions about tournament logistics.

According to industry reports, FIFA released between 70% and 80% of its previously reserved hotel inventory in Vancouver, amounting to roughly 15,000 room nights during the tournament period.

The development in Vancouver is part of a broader trend across multiple World Cup host cities in North America. FIFA has also canceled significant hotel bookings in cities such as Philadelphia and Mexico City, where thousands of rooms had initially been secured.

In Philadelphia alone, around 2,000 rooms out of an initial 10,000 reservations were released, while similar reductions were reported in Mexico City.

These adjustments suggest a wider recalibration of accommodation needs as the tournament approaches.

While FIFA has not issued a detailed official explanation, industry experts indicate that such moves are not uncommon for mega-events, where organizers often overbook early to guarantee availability before refining their requirements.

Officials within the hotel industry noted that FIFA likely reserved excess rooms as a contingency, adjusted allocations based on finalized team, staff, and sponsor needs and released surplus inventory back into the market.

However, the scale of the cancellations — particularly in Vancouver, is reported to be higher than usual, drawing increased attention.

For hotel operators, the sudden release of rooms has created a mixed situation:

* Short-term disruption to planning and revenue projections
* New opportunities to sell rooms directly to fans

Many of the canceled rooms are now expected to return to the open market, potentially easing accommodation pressure for traveling supporters ahead of the tournament.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams across 16 host cities, including Vancouver.
