World football governing body FIFA has officially confirmed that Democratic Republic of the Congo will compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup intercontinental play-off tournament scheduled to take place in Mexico later this month.
The confirmation follows FIFA’s publication of tournament documentation outlining the six participating nations set to battle for the final two qualification slots at the expanded 2026 World Cup. DR Congo is listed among the teams expected to feature in the mini-tournament.
Six Teams, Two Tickets
The intercontinental play-off competition will involve six nations from different confederations, with matches scheduled between March 26 and March 31 in host cities in Mexico. The tournament format will see two higher-ranked teams enter at the semi-final stage, while the remaining four sides contest preliminary fixtures.
The winners of the two final matches will secure the last available places at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Qualification Context
DR Congo earned its pathway into the intercontinental play-off route following the conclusion of its continental qualification campaign. Although there have been reports of appeals and administrative complaints from other federations regarding eligibility matters, FIFA’s latest official tournament listings confirm DR Congo’s inclusion in the Mexico tournament.
As preparations intensify, the Congolese Football Federation is expected to finalise squad arrangements and logistics for the decisive fixtures.
With the 2026 World Cup set to be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, the intercontinental play-off in Mexico represents a final opportunity for DR Congo to secure a place on football’s biggest stage.
