FIFA World Cup 26™: Canada Issues Visa Guidance, Warns Against Fraud Ahead of Tournament

By Yomi Kuku, Toronto Canada

As preparations intensify for the FIFA World Cup 26™, co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico, Canadian immigration authorities have issued clear guidance for international fans planning to travel to Canada for the tournament, while warning strongly against visa-related fraud.

According to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), there is no special FIFA World Cup visa. All visitors must meet Canada’s standard entry requirements, either by obtaining a visitor visa (Temporary Resident Visa) or an electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), depending on nationality.

Canadian authorities have also cautioned fans to be vigilant against fraudulent agents claiming they can guarantee entry into Canada for the World Cup. Officials stress that no agent, consultant or intermediary can guarantee a visa or eTA, and that applicants are personally responsible for the accuracy of all information submitted — even when using a representative. Providing false or misleading information could result in a five-year ban from entering Canada.

What Fans Need to Enter Canada

Fans from visa-required countries** must apply for a visitor visa, while those from visa-exempt countries traveling by air will need an eTA. Importantly, holding a World Cup match ticket does not guarantee visa approval, and a ticket is not required to apply.

Authorities advise fans to apply early, as processing times for visitor visas can vary significantly by country.

Step-by-Step: How to Apply

1. Determine your travel document

  • Apply for a visitor visa if your nationality requires one.
  • Apply for an eTA if your country is visa-exempt and you are flying to Canada.

2. Gather required documents
For a visitor visa, applicants typically need a valid passport, proof of funds, travel plans, accommodation details, and a clear purpose of visit, such as attending the FIFA World Cup.
For an eTA, applicants need a valid passport, an email address and a debit or credit card.

3. Apply online
Applications must be submitted through the official Government of Canada website. Visitor visa applicants create an IRCC account, complete the application form, upload documents and pay the required fees. eTA applications are completed online and usually processed within minutes, though some may require additional checks.

4. Biometrics (if required)
Visitor visa applicants may be asked to provide fingerprints and a photograph after submitting their application.

5. Await a decision
Processing times vary. While eTAs are often approved quickly, visitor visas may take weeks or months. Approval does not automatically guarantee entry, as final decisions are made by border officers upon arrival.

6. Prepare for travel
Travelers should ensure their passport details match their application, carry proof of return plans and accommodation, and comply strictly with the duration of stay granted.

Canada will host 13 World Cup matches in Toronto and Vancouver during the tournament in 2026, and officials encourage fans to rely only on official government channels for immigration information.
