Plans to stage the 2026 Finalissima at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium have encountered fresh uncertainty after the Argentine Football Association rejected the proposed venue.
The highly anticipated match between the Argentina national football team and Spain national football team is expected to take place on March 27, but the Argentine federation has voiced strong reservations over holding the contest in Spain.
Reports indicate that the AFA was not consulted before the Bernabéu was suggested as host and believes the decision would give Spain a significant home advantage.
As a result, Argentina has proposed moving the match to Italy, which it considers a more appropriate neutral venue for the clash between the champions of South America and Europe.
The Finalissima, revived in 2022 after decades of inactivity, brings together the winners of the Copa América and the UEFA European Championship in a single showcase match jointly organized by UEFA and CONMEBOL.
Argentina, the reigning Copa América champions, are expected to face Euro winners Spain in what promises to be a high-profile international showdown.
However, with the Argentine federation declining the Madrid proposal and advocating a neutral alternative, the final venue for the intercontinental clash remains under discussion among football authorities.
