Diego Simeone admitted that the UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium slipped away from Atlético Madrid due to fine margins, missed opportunities, and decisive moments that ultimately favoured Arsenal FC.
The Argentine coach cut a composed figure after the match, resisting any dramatic reaction despite the disappointment. Instead, he framed the result as a reflection of football’s unforgiving nature at the highest level, where minor lapses can undo months of hard work. He maintained that his side remained competitive across both legs, even if the final outcome suggested otherwise.
“We competed well, we stayed in the tie, and we had moments where we could have changed the story,” Simeone said. “But at this level, if you don’t take your chances, you pay for it.”
There was also a hint of frustration as Simeone addressed a contentious moment in the match, suggesting that a potential penalty decision might have altered the course of the game. However, he avoided dwelling on officiating, stressing that the defeat could not be reduced to a single incident.
“There are situations that are very clear, but we won’t focus only on that,” he added. “The match had many moments, and we must look at all of them.”
Simeone was quick to acknowledge the quality of the opposition, praising Arsenal’s discipline and efficiency in key moments. His remarks reflected respect rather than resentment, highlighting the narrow gap between the two sides.
“We have to congratulate Arsenal,” he said. “They did what was needed to go through, and that deserves recognition.”
As the dust settled on the semi-final, Simeone admitted to the emotional weight of the defeat. The intensity of the occasion, coupled with the closeness of the contest, left little room for immediate reflection on what comes next. For now, his focus remains on processing a result that, in his view, was decided by moments that could easily have gone the other way.
