Nigeria’s Flamingos have been crowned champions of the 2026 WAFU-B U17 Girls Cup after completing a perfect campaign with a commanding 4-0 victory over Togo in Sunday’s final in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory gave Akeem Busari’s side five wins from five matches and confirmed Nigeria as the champions of the regional tournament. The Flamingos scored 17 goals and conceded just two throughout the competition.
Captain Harmony Chidi set the tone for the final by converting two penalties in the opening half. Her first spot-kick came in the 15th minute before she doubled Nigeria’s advantage from another penalty in the 35th minute.
Nigeria carried a comfortable 2-0 lead into the interval before extending its advantage after the restart.
Oluebube Umejiaku added the third goal in the 67th minute, while Oluwakemi Adegbuyi completed the scoring in the 90th minute as the Flamingos sealed a comprehensive victory over Togo.
The final result completed an impressive sequence for Nigeria in the tournament. The Flamingos opened their campaign with a 5-0 victory over Niger Republic before defeating Ghana 4-2, Burkina Faso 2-0 and hosts Côte d’Ivoire 2-0.
Nigeria therefore finished the competition with a maximum 15 points, scoring in every match and maintaining an unbeaten record from start to finish.
The triumph also provides an important boost ahead of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco next month, where the Flamingos will represent Nigeria on the global stage.
Nigeria’s 2022 Flamingos side won a bronze medal at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, and the current team will now turn its attention to the global tournament after their outstanding preparation in Côte d’Ivoire.
