Gabon Suspends National Football Team and Bans Aubameyang After AFCON Exit

The Gabonese government has taken the unprecedented step of suspending the national football team and banning star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang following the team’s disappointing performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Gabon suffered three consecutive defeats in the group stage, culminating in a 3-2 loss to Ivory Coast after leading 2-0. This performance led to the team’s elimination from the tournament and prompted swift action from government officials.

Acting Sports Minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula announced the suspension of the national team and the dismissal of the entire coaching staff, including head coach Thierry Mouyouma. Additionally, veteran defender Bruno Ecuele Manga was also banned from future selection.

Aubameyang, who had returned to international duty after a previous retirement, played in the first two matches of the tournament, scoring in the 3-2 defeat to Mozambique. He missed the final group game due to a thigh injury and had returned to his club, Olympique de Marseille, prior to the announcement.

In response to the ban, Aubameyang expressed his disappointment, stating that the team’s issues extended beyond individual players. He retires from international football with 83 caps and 40 goals, making him Gabon’s all-time leading scorer.

The Gabonese government’s actions have drawn criticism from football governing bodies, with concerns raised about political interference in sports. FIFA has yet to comment on the situation.

The duration of the national team’s suspension remains unclear, and no information has been provided regarding plans for restructuring or future competitions. The Gabonese Football Federation has not issued a statement on the matter.
