GFA Strengthens Black Stars Backroom Staff Ahead of 2026 World Cup

By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced a major reinforcement of the Black Stars’ technical team with the addition of five experienced professionals as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

The appointments, confirmed by the GFA and widely reported by local and regional sports outlets, are aimed at enhancing tactical expertise, performance analysis, scouting, medical support, and player conditioning as Ghana’s national team targets a strong showing at the global tournament scheduled for June–July 2026.

Alain Ravera – Appointed Assistant Coach.  The French tactician brings extensive international experience, having previously worked with the Guinea national team and top French club AS Monaco.

Kim Lars Björkegren – Also named Assistant Coach, joining from his role as Black Queens head coach, where he led the Ghana women’s team to a bronze medal at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations and secured qualification for the 2026 WAFCON tournament.

José Daniel Martínez Alfonso– Appointed to bolster scouting, match preparation, and performance analysis. The Spanish coach currently serves as an assistant coach and video analyst with Major League Soccer’s Atlanta FC.

Carlos Lozano Romero – Returns as Team Physiotherapist. Romero previously worked with the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, bringing valuable continuity to the medical setup.

Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi – Named Performance Coach, responsible for physical conditioning and overall performance optimisation throughout the World Cup campaign.

These appointments have been made specifically for the 2026 World Cup campaign and follow the GFA’s long-standing tradition of expanding its technical staff whenever Ghana qualifies for major international tournaments.

The new technical staff will work alongside Head Coach Otto Addo and the existing backroom team as Ghana intensifies preparations for the World Cup finals, where the Black Stars are drawn to face England, Croatia and Panama in a challenging Group L.

GFA officials say the expanded technical structure is part of a broader strategy to ensure the team is well-balanced, tactically prepared and physically optimised for competition against some of the world’s elite sides.

As Ghana continues its preparations, football stakeholders and supporters will be watching closely to see how the newly reinforced technical setup impacts the Black Stars’ performance in the months leading up to the World Cup.
