Bayern Munich forward Jamal Musiala suffered a worrying on-field collapse during Saturday’s 3-1 pre-season victory over RB Leipzig, with reports indicating that he experienced dizziness and circulatory problems in temperatures of around 33°C.
Musiala had only recently entered the game as a second-half substitute when he scored Bayern’s third goal. Shortly afterwards, the Germany international appeared unsteady and collapsed on the pitch, prompting an immediate medical response.
New Bayern signing Ismael Saibari was among the first players to react. He noticed Musiala struggling and helped him down to the ground, while Joshua Kimmich also rushed over to assist before the medical team arrived.
The incident briefly silenced the Allianz Arena as medical personnel attended to Musiala. An emergency doctor and other medical staff entered the pitch, with the player subsequently able to leave the field, although reports described him as initially appearing dazed.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl subsequently offered reassurance about the 23-year-old’s condition. “The most important thing is that he is well.”
Initial examinations reportedly found no serious problems, while further reports said Musiala had complained of dizziness and circulation difficulties associated with the high temperatures.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are particularly notable because of the intense heat during the match. Temperatures were reported to have reached approximately 33°C, with some reports putting the figure closer to 34°C.
Musiala’s collapse came just minutes after he had made his mark on the game by scoring Bayern’s third goal in their 3-1 victory over Leipzig.
The match itself had seen Bayern take the lead through Luis Díaz, before Leipzig’s Brajan Gruda equalised. Nathaniel Brown restored Bayern’s advantage before Musiala completed the scoring.
The victory was overshadowed, however, by the late scare involving Musiala. The midfielder’s recovery is likely to be monitored closely by Bayern’s medical staff, particularly given his history of a serious leg injury that kept him out for an extended period before his return to competitive football earlier this year.
For now, the immediate concern has been eased by Bayern’s post-match assessment that Musiala was doing well.
The incident nevertheless provided a stark reminder of the physical risks associated with playing football in extreme heat, with Musiala’s condition expected to remain under observation as Bayern continue their preparations for the new season.
