In a stunning upset, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) eliminated Nigeria from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, clinching a 4-3 victory in a tense penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in Rabat. This defeat marks Nigeria’s second consecutive failure to qualify for the World Cup, following their absence in 2022.
Nigeria took an early advantage in the third minute when Frank Onyeka’s deflected shot found the net. However, DR Congo responded in the 32nd minute, capitalizing on a midfield error that allowed Meschack Elia to level the score.
The Super Eagles suffered a significant blow as star striker Victor Osimhen was forced off at halftime due to injury. Despite creating several chances, Nigeria couldn’t regain their lead, with both teams failing to score in extra time.
In the decisive shootout, Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi missed the final penalty, allowing DR Congo’s Chancel Mbemba to convert the winning spot-kick.
This victory propels DR Congo to the inter-confederation playoffs in March, where they will compete for a spot in the expanded 48-team 2026 World Cup. The Leopards aim to make their second World Cup appearance, their first since 1974.
