Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim following a turbulent 14-month tenure marked by underwhelming performances and internal disputes over managerial authority and transfer policies.
Appointed in November 2024 from Sporting CP, Amorim’s stint at Old Trafford included a disappointing 15th-place finish in the Premier League—the club’s worst in decades—and a loss in the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Despite significant summer investments totaling £165 million on players like Benjamin Šeško, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha, the team’s form remained inconsistent.
Tensions escalated when Amorim publicly criticized the club’s hierarchy after a 1–1 draw with Leeds United, asserting, “I came to be a manager, not just a coach,” highlighting his frustration over limited control in transfer decisions. This outburst, coupled with the team’s lacklustre ster performances, led to his dismissal.
In the interim, former midfielder Darren Fletcher has been appointed as caretaker manager while the club searches for a permanent replacement.
Amorim’s departure underscores the ongoing challenges Manchester United faces in reestablishing stability and success in the post-Ferguson era.
