French giants Olympique de Marseille have appointed Habib Beye as head coach of their first team, ending widespread speculation linking Eric Chelle to the vacant role, the club confirmed in an official statement.
Marseille announced Beye’s appointment as part of a restructuring of their technical setup, placing the former Senegal international in charge ahead of the decisive phase of the season.
The club said Beye’s knowledge of the club’s philosophy and his coaching development made him the preferred candidate to lead the team.
The decision brings clarity to weeks of uncertainty during which Chelle, current coach of Nigeria’s Super Eagles, had been strongly linked with the position following Marseille’s search for a new manager.
Chelle, who has been credited with stabilizing the Super Eagles since his appointment, was reportedly among several candidates considered, fueling concerns over his immediate future with Nigeria.
However, Marseille’s move to hand Beye the job has effectively ended those rumours, allowing Chelle to remain focused on his role with the Nigerian national team.
Beye, a former Marseille defender, returns to the club in a managerial capacity with the task of improving results and restoring consistency.
His appointment marks a significant step in his coaching career and signals Marseille’s decision to place their trust in a figure closely connected to the club.
Marseille are expected to begin a new chapter under Beye as they pursue their domestic and European objectives, while Chelle’s continuation offers stability for Nigeria ahead of upcoming international competitions.
