French club Lille OSC has taken the rare step of formally filing a complaint with FIFA after defender Chancel Mbemba was kept in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) following international duty, leaving him unable to return in time for this weekend’s Ligue 1 derby against RC Lens.
Mbemba, captain of the DR Congo national team, and his teammates helped the Léopards qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2026, the country’s first since 1974, by beating Jamaica in the intercontinental playoff. A victory parade and presidential celebration in Kinshasa subsequently delayed his return.
Lille president Olivier Létang condemned the situation, saying the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association (FECOFA) acted “unilaterally” by keeping Mbemba past the 48‑hour release window mandated by FIFA regulations after international matches.
“Mbemba should have been back by Thursday afternoon,” Létang noted, stressing that the delay sets a “very dangerous precedent for all clubs,” many of which rely on their international players for domestic competitions. Lille has referred the situation to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee, and the club says international football bodies have already contacted FECOFA.
The absence of the 31‑year‑old central defender, a key figure in Lille’s backline, leaves coach Bruno Génésio without one of his most experienced players ahead of Saturday’s derby at the Stade Pierre‑Mauroy.
Mbemba’s teammate Ngal’ayel Mukau, also on international duty, returned to Lille on schedule, but another Congolese, Arthur Masuaku of Lens, is similarly delayed and will miss the match.
The clash underscores growing tensions between club obligations and national team commitments, especially when celebratory or state events extend beyond regulated release periods. Other European clubs with Congolese internationals reportedly face similar challenges this weekend.
