Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has strongly criticized his former manager José Mourinho for questioning Vinícius Júnior’s conduct amid a racism controversy, insisting there was nothing wrong with the Brazilian’s goal celebration.
Mikel expressed disbelief at suggestions that Vinícius’ actions contributed to the abuse he suffered, arguing that such views dangerously shift blame away from racism itself. The former Chelsea midfielder, during his podcast show, described it as “crazy” that some people argued the winger “shouldn’t have celebrated the way he did,” questioning whether celebration style could ever justify racist reactions.
The Nigerian football legend insisted the Real Madrid forward’s celebration was harmless, noting that Vinícius merely danced briefly at the corner flag — an act he said is a normal and widely accepted part of football culture.
Mikel’s comments came after Mourinho reportedly criticised the winger’s celebration as provocative, remarks that sparked widespread backlash and reignited debate over how football authorities and influential figures address racism in the sport.
The former Super Eagles captain emphasised that racism should never be rationalised under any circumstances, regardless of context or emotional reactions during matches.
Mikel, who enjoyed a successful career with Chelsea between 2006 and 2017 and earned over 90 caps for Nigeria, has increasingly used his platform to speak on football’s social issues since retiring from professional football.
His latest intervention adds to growing calls within the football community for stronger accountability and clearer support for players subjected to discrimination.
