Milan prosecutors have opened a formal investigation into Serie A refereeing coordinator Gianluca Rocchi over suspected sporting fraud, in a case that could have significant implications for the integrity of Italian football officiating.
The probe, confirmed by multiple Italian media outlets including La Gazzetta dello Sport, centres on allegations that Rocchi may have interfered in referee appointments and influenced VAR decisions during the 2024–25 season.
At the heart of the investigation is a Serie A fixture between Udinese Calcio and Parma Calcio 1913 in March 2025. Investigators are examining claims that Rocchi signaled to VAR officials, allegedly by knocking on the booth glass, to prompt an on-field review that resulted in a penalty decision.
Authorities are also reviewing whether Rocchi manipulated referee assignments for high-profile matches, including fixtures involving Inter Milan. One allegation suggests referee Daniele Doveri was removed from a key Inter match due to concerns he was not favored by the club. These claims, however, remain unproven.
The investigation reportedly stems from a complaint filed in 2025 by a former assistant referee, prompting prosecutors to examine potential irregularities in officiating processes across the league.
Rocchi has stepped aside from his role pending the outcome of the investigation. Meanwhile, Italian football authorities have urged caution, noting that some reports circulating in the media may be exaggerated or inaccurate.
No charges have been formally established, and the case remains under active investigation.
The development adds to ongoing scrutiny of refereeing standards in Serie A, with further updates expected as prosecutors continue their inquiry.
