By Kazeem Ajibola Shoyebo

Morocco commenced their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a 2–0 win against Comoros at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat on Sunday. Second-half goals from Brahim Díaz and Ayoub El Kaabi secured the victory for the host nation.

The match remained goalless in the first half, with Morocco missing an early penalty and facing a resilient Comoros defense. In the 55th minute, Díaz opened the scoring, finishing a move initiated by Noussair Mazraoui. El Kaabi, coming off the bench, doubled the lead in the 74th minute with a spectacular overhead kick, sealing the win for Morocco.

Despite the victory, Morocco faced challenges, including an injury to captain Romain Saïss, who left the field early. Comoros had opportunities to score, notably a chance by Rafiki Said, which was saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou.

Morocco’s next match in Group A is against Mali on December 26 in Rabat, while Comoros will face Zambia in Casablanca on the same day.

The win marks Morocco’s 19th consecutive victory, setting a new national team record and reinforcing their status as tournament favorites .
