RCD Mallorca pulled off a stunning upset against Real Madrid, with Vedat Muriqi scoring deep into stoppage time to seal a dramatic 2-1 victory and claim all three points in a pulsating La Liga encounter.
Mallorca took the lead in the 42nd minute through Manu Morlanes, capping off a disciplined first-half display that frustrated the visitors. Real Madrid looked to have salvaged a point when Éder Militão produced a superb equaliser in the 88th minute, setting up a tense finale.
However, just as the match appeared headed for a draw, Muriqi struck in the 90+1 minute, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations and completing a famous giant-killing performance.
The winning goal carried added emotional weight, with Muriqi seen in tears after the final whistle. The Kosovo international had endured heartbreak earlier in the week as his country failed to qualify for the World Cup, making his decisive contribution even more poignant.
The striker’s goal also moves him within one strike of equalling Samuel Eto’o’s all-time club record, further underlining his importance to Mallorca’s attack this season.
Real Madrid’s late collapse deals a significant blow to their title ambitions, increasing pressure with just eight games remaining in the season.
Head coach Álvaro Arbeloa took full responsibility for the defeat, admitting:
“La Liga is now harder than it was before this match. Like I told my players, there are eight games left and we need to win them all. It’s my fault — the loss is on me 100%. As soon as the players leave the dressing room, I want them focused on Bayern.”
For Mallorca, the victory stands as one of their biggest results of the season, a resilient and clinical performance capped by Muriqi’s late heroics.
