The strongest angle is Pedro Neto’s decisive brace and Chelsea’s defensive response, with Emiliano Martínez’s worrying injury adding a sombre note to the victory. Chelsea’s official match report confirms that Neto scored 43 seconds into the second half and struck again in the 90th minute, while Reuters reports that Martínez was stretchered off and taken to hospital after a collision.
Neto Brace Ends Everton’s Unbeaten Run as Chelsea Secure First Clean Sheet Since January
Pedro Neto scored twice in the second half to fire Chelsea to a 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday, October 17, ending the Toffees’ unbeaten league start and delivering the Blues’ first league clean sheet since January.
The Portuguese winger broke the deadlock just 43 seconds after the restart before sealing the result in the 90th minute at Hill Dickinson Stadium, securing three valuable points for Xabi Alonso’s side.
The result also ended Chelsea’s run of 22 Premier League matches without a clean sheet, according to Reuters, as the visitors produced a disciplined defensive performance to complement Neto’s clinical finishing. Chelsea moved above Everton in the league table and provisionally climbed to fourth place.
The opening half was fiercely contested, with both sides struggling to find a breakthrough amid a physical encounter that produced several yellow cards.
Chelsea came closest to scoring before the interval when captain Moisés Caicedo unleashed a superb volley that struck the crossbar. Everton also survived a late scare when Maxence Lacroix’s goalbound header was cleared off the line by Harrison Armstrong.
Neto changed the contest almost immediately after half-time. A neat backheel from Morgan Rogers released Jorrel Hato down the left, and the defender’s low delivery found Neto in space to sweep the ball past Jordan Pickford.
Everton attempted to respond, but Chelsea remained organised and threatened to extend their lead on the counterattack. Neto eventually put the result beyond doubt in the 90th minute, collecting the loose ball after Jordan Henderson’s free-kick was blocked before calmly finding the bottom corner.
The victory, however, was overshadowed by a serious injury to Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
The Argentine was stretchered off following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite while attempting to deal with a free-kick in the second half. He was taken to hospital for precautionary tests, with Chelsea manager Alonso later confirming that Martínez had left the stadium conscious.
Mike Penders replaced Martínez to make his Premier League debut and helped Chelsea preserve their clean sheet during an extended period of stoppage time.
Neto dedicated the victory to his injured teammate, saying after the match: “Shame for Emi but we wish you all the best. This win is for him.”
Chelsea will hope the result provides momentum for the next stage of their campaign, while Everton must regroup after suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season.
