Head coach Amir Ghalenoei has described Iran’s 2–1 defeat to the Nigeria national football team as a valuable learning experience, praising the quality and physicality of the Nigerian side while highlighting tactical gains from the friendly.
Iran fell narrowly despite a spirited performance, with the match serving as part of both teams’ preparations for upcoming international fixtures.
Speaking after the game, Ghalenoei emphasized the importance of the encounter, particularly from a tactical standpoint.
“I think this was a very useful preparation game for us, especially since we were able to implement Plan B in defense against a strong and physical team like Nigeria.”
The Iranian coach suggested that facing a team with Nigeria’s intensity provided a meaningful test for his squad, especially in adapting defensive structures under pressure.
Ghalenoei was also full of praise for the Super Eagles, highlighting the pedigree of the squad and their presence across top European leagues.
“Nigeria was a very good team, and all eleven players on this team play in major European leagues such as Spain, Italy, England, France, Greece and Turkey.”
His remarks reflect the growing global profile of Nigerian players, many of whom feature prominently in elite competitions across Europe.
The Iran coach pointed to the flexibility offered by modern substitution rules as a key factor in the match’s usefulness.
“The national team needs such games. We also tried to use more players. Fortunately, with the new rules and the possibility of making eight substitutions, we had a good opportunity to evaluate different players.”
This approach allowed Iran to assess squad depth, experiment with combinations, and provide valuable minutes to a wider pool of players.
